From Photojournalism to Portrait Artistry

I’ve always known I wanted to be a photographer. I studied photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and spent over a decade as a staff photographer for newspapers across the East Coast — including right here in Hilton Head.
While working at a local paper, I began photographing families visiting the beach. What started as a side project quickly became my true focus — work that allows me to connect with people and create something lasting.
Eventually, I took the leap into full-time portrait photography, opening Kellie McCann Portraits to serve clients throughout Hilton Head, Savannah, and the Lowcountry.
Today, I specialize in creating portraits that are both beautifully finished and emotionally real — whether in the studio or on-location at the coast.

My studio is located just before the bridge to Hilton Head — a space I never imagined owning (especially since studio photography was my least favorite class in college!). But it’s now where some of my most meaningful work happens creating timeless, images.
A Personal Note
I’m a perfectionist — from posing and lighting to the final artwork. I believe every family should see themselves in beautifully finished portraits, not just digital files.
I don’t have a portrait with my own family, and that absence stays with me. It’s why I do this work — so your family doesn’t go without.

Kellie holds a Master of Photography Degree from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and is a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) — a distinction earned by fewer than 2,500 photographers nationwide. She also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the renowned Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), one of the country’s top photography programs.
